The hip joint is a synovial ball and socket type joint of the lower extremity. To reduce irradiation around genital organs and to image the soft tissue or unossified structures of the pediatric hip, Ultrasonographic examination of the hip has become important in the diagnostic tool of the soft tissue structures, such as joint capsule, ligament, muscle and tendon as well as the joint. The most common applications for ultrasonography in the hip are detection of effusion or synovitis within the joint or its adjacent bursa. However, its role in the management of the "painful hip" has yet to be defined and the ultrasonographic examination of the hip requires an adequate understanding of the normal anatomy of the elbow.
