The technological development of ultrasound equipment and the availability of high frequency eletronic transducers allow an accurate evaluation of the ankle. Accurate assessment of the superficial structures of the ankle, such as tendons and ligaments, needs a good knowledge of the normal anatomy. This article reviews techniques and application of ultrasound imaging and normal anatomy of the ankle and foot. (Clinical Pain 2009;8:45-54)
